Holder Home became a dear cornerstone of Raleigh’s creative community, helping foster a new gravitational point for artists and patrons in Raleigh’s quickly developing downtown periphery on South Saunders. Its meticulously curated antique goods and curiosities were maintained by the steady eye of Bryan Costello, an NC native and disciple of the notorious team at Uncommon Objects in Austin, TX. Holder hosted artist events and became a gathering place for Raleigh’s creative community while its doors were open, while at the same time offering interior design services and insight to patrons and clients throughout North Carolina.
There is a particular strangeness that one feels when walking into an antique shop; you’re walking into a place where timelines overlap, where objects from the past have persisted into the present, and tell us something of the lives of the people that once held and used those objects. Limbo worked with Bryan to capture that sense of mystery and discovery, and materialize it into a brand identity that celebrated those “moments” where you connect with an object and feel it speaking to you about its past and the people who created it. We designed and deployed a full identity system which included a comprehensive logo set, a custom typeface, and several illustrations.
We also worked to build them a forward-looking web presence, that (perhaps anachronistically) contextualized a shop full of historic objects in a modern digital context. We wanted the website to have a sense of depth and space, so we played with elements living and moving on various z-planes to add dimensionality to the the otherwise flat plane of the browser window.
